A Vampire Facial, also known as a Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Facial, is a rejuvenating skin treatment that combines microneedling with the application of PRP. The process starts by drawing a small amount of blood from the patient, which is then placed in a centrifuge to isolate the platelet-rich plasma. Once the PRP is prepared, the patient undergoes a microneedling session, during which tiny needles create micro-injuries in the skin. The PRP is then applied to the skin, enhancing the penetration and effectiveness of the treatment, leading to revitalized, youthful-looking skin.

Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about your Vampire Facial® treatment

BEFORE THE TREATMENT

1. What is a Vampire Facial®?

Microneedling with PRP, also known as the Vampire Facial®, is a transformative in-office treatment that combines the rejuvenating effects of microneedling with the healing power of platelet-rich plasma (PRP). Microneedling, or collagen induction therapy, helps reduce fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, and other skin imperfections by creating tiny micro-injuries that stimulate collagen production. When paired with PRP, a technique that harnesses the body’s natural healing processes, the treatment’s effectiveness is significantly enhanced. The PRP is applied during the microneedling session, amplifying the skin’s rejuvenation and delivering a refreshed, youthful glow. This powerful combination has made the Vampire Facial® a popular choice among both everyday patients and celebrities seeking a revitalized complexion.

2. How does the Vampire Facial® work?

To understand how microneedling with PRP works, it's essential to grasp the individual benefits of each procedure. Microneedling is a treatment performed in-office that targets various skin conditions like fine lines, scarring, and hyperpigmentation by stimulating your body's natural collagen production. Using a microneedling tool, tiny pin-sized injuries are made in the outer layer of the skin. These micro-injuries trigger the skin's healing process, encouraging the production of collagen, which is vital for reducing skin imperfections. Collagen supports the skin’s structure and enhances the production of other crucial components, such as hyaluronic acid and elastin. Hyaluronic acid helps the skin retain moisture, while elastin maintains skin firmness. PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, is utilized for regenerative purposes, including muscle, skin tissue, and nerve regeneration. Recently, it has gained popularity for enhancing skin complexion. PRP is derived from the patient’s own blood, which is processed in a centrifuge to isolate a concentrated blend of platelets. This plasma is then applied topically to the skin to accelerate healing and rejuvenation. Combining microneedling with PRP leverages the strengths of both techniques. After microneedling creates micro-injuries in the skin, the PRP application boosts the healing process, enhancing collagen and elastin production for a refreshed and youthful complexion.

2. Am I a good candidate for this treatment? / Will this treatment work for me?

Microneedling with PRP is ideal for healthy individuals seeking to improve mild to moderate fine lines, wrinkles, acne scarring, hyperpigmentation, and other skin imperfections. For those with more severe skin concerns, more intensive cosmetic procedures might be a better option. This treatment is not recommended for individuals with blood-related conditions, such as anemia. Additionally, if you are taking blood thinners or NSAIDs, it’s essential to consult a RichSkin provider, as these medications may need to be adjusted before and after the procedure. The best way to determine if you’re a suitable candidate is to schedule a free consultation with a RichSkin provider. They will evaluate your skin conditions and discuss your goals to help you choose the most appropriate treatment.

3. How is the Vampire Facial® treatment performed

The procedure begins with the application of a topical anesthetic to ensure your comfort throughout the treatment. While the anesthetic takes a few minutes to take effect, your blood is drawn. This blood is then processed in a centrifuge to separate the platelets and create the platelet-rich plasma, often referred to as “liquid gold.” Once the PRP is prepared and you are numbed, the microneedling session starts. A device equipped with very fine needles is used to create tiny pinholes in your skin. These micro-injuries facilitate deeper absorption of the PRP solution, enhancing its effectiveness and promoting better skin rejuvenation.

4. How many sessions will I need to see results?

Most patients typically undergo 3-6 microneedling with PRP treatments per area, with sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart. The exact number of treatments needed depends on individual factors and the specific area being treated. After the initial series, 1-2 maintenance treatments per year are recommended to sustain results and ensure continued skin rejuvenation.

5. How often/far apart should the treatments be?

Ideally treatments are 4-6 weeks apart.

6. Do I need to do anything to prepare for the treatment?

Ensure your skin is clean and free from lotions, creams, perfumes, powder, or makeup before your treatment session. Avoid tanning prior to the procedure. Remove all jewelry from the treatment area and, if necessary, shave any excessive hair from the area beforehand. Additionally, be prepared to provide information about your medical history, as your provider will likely inquire about it.

DURING THE TREATMENT

1. How long does a treatment session last?

Each session typically lasts about 45 minutes, though the duration may vary depending on the area being treated.

2. What does the treatment feel like?

During the treatment, you’ll feel tiny pinpricks on your skin, followed by a slight zap. Afterward, your face may feel warm, similar to the sensation of a mild sunburn.

3. Will it be painful?

SkinPen microneedling treatments may be slightly uncomfortable but are generally not painful. You might experience intense heat, akin to the sensation of a sunburn, and your face will appear red immediately after the treatment. For more aggressive treatments, a topical numbing cream may be applied to minimize discomfort.

AFTER THE TREATMENT

1. How will my skin feel after my treatment?

After the treatment, your skin may feel warm, similar to a sunburn, and could remain red for a few hours to a few days, depending on the treatment's intensity. It’s important to follow all pre- and post-treatment instructions to ensure the best results and promote proper healing.

2. How long will the results last and are they permanent?

Many patients start to see results within the first few days after their initial treatment. As your body continues to produce collagen, improvements will become more noticeable over the next six months. Full results are typically achieved around the six-month mark.

3. Is there any downtime/How long is recovery time?

Yes, but only for 48 hours post-treatment (or up to 5 days for more aggressive treatments). Your skin will be red, and for the first 24-48 hours, you should avoid applying or rubbing anything on your skin, including water and sweat (so skip hot yoga or other activities that cause perspiration). After 24 hours, you can apply makeup and resume your regular skincare routine. Use sunscreen with at least SPF 30, preferably a chemical-free option. Avoid rigorous exercise, hot baths, or massages on the treatment area for the first 2 days. Keep your skin clean and protected from the sun, and avoid tanning.

4. Do I need to do anything after my treatment?

If your skin feels hot, you can use a fan to help cool it down. Avoid touching or scratching the treatment area and refrain from applying lotion, makeup, or any other products, including water, for the first 24 hours. After 24 hours, apply sunscreen with at least SPF 30, preferably a chemical-free option. For the first 2 days post-treatment, avoid rigorous exercise, hot baths, and massages on the treatment area. Keep your skin clean, protected from the sun, and avoid tanning. RickSkin will provide you with a post-care skin regimen; be sure to follow the instructions provided in the box.

5. If I got a treatment on my face, can I put makeup up on right after?

No, you should wait 24 hours after your treatment before applying any makeup or lotion.
